Mozy Makes It Big: Online Backup Deal for All 300,000+ GE Employees

Posted on April 24, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 1 Comment on Mozy Makes It Big: Online Backup Deal for All 300,000+ GE Employees

MozyproTill now, Mozy has been an up and coming backup solution for the home user with its free online backup (up to two gigabytes) or its unlimited online backup for $5 per month. Since its launch in April 2006, over 175,000 customers have signed up. But the big news is that General Electric recently bought MozyPro (the enterprise version of Mozy) for all of its 300,000+ employees. Not a bad way to more than double your customer base. And GE is a company that does its homework on purchases like these, so this is definitely a credibility boost for Mozy as well.

Social Networking Dethroning Sex in Terms of Online Traffic

Posted on April 20, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 2 Comments on Social Networking Dethroning Sex in Terms of Online Traffic

UstrafficgraphThe Economist (subscription required) has an interesting piece on sex and the Internet, which revolves around the graph pictured to the right. While the online porn industry was valued at $1 billion back in 2002 by America’s National Research Council, the latest data shows that social networking traffic is set to take over the number one spot any day now. It’s also pointed out that sex is often the first mover with technology before the mainstream is ready to adopt it for everyday use (such has been the case with photography, videocassettes, and satellite television).

But before we assume all is well in Zion, let’s take a look at what these social networking sites are used for:

My Two Months without Internet

Posted on April 6, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 1 Comment on My Two Months without Internet

Internet2The apartment complex I live in forces me to use whatever Internet connection the whole complex is on. Since I moved here last year, it’s been a local provider until that company went bankrupt. Service stopped on January 25. Not to worry, the apartment complex switched to using Verizon DSL. But that service went live on March 22.

I’m back in school getting my MBA while running TechConsumer. Here’s my story of doing both without Internet at home:

Is Wikipedia the Webster for the 21st Century?

Posted on April 4, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 1 Comment on Is Wikipedia the Webster for the 21st Century?

WikipediaI grew up with the Webster dictionary as my guide to defining words. I remember homework assignments that started with “Webster defines…” followed by the definition of some term and a follow up question on which I would need to write a paper. Another classic use of Webster was at church. Someone preaching on love? The easiest way to begin is by stating “Webster defines love as…” and then moving on to a more eloquent expansion on the basic definition.

During this past month, both of these examples came back to me, except this time Webster was replaced by Wikipedia.

Microsoft CEO Trash Talks Google While Google CEO Eats Lunch Down the Hall

Posted on March 16, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 8 Comments on Microsoft CEO Trash Talks Google While Google CEO Eats Lunch Down the Hall

This one’s a classic in the never-ending Google vs. Microsoft saga. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer met with business students at Stanford University only to bash Google during the Q&A. He said things like, “Google built one very good business. They only have one thing they do. Everything else is sort of cute.” And in response to Google’s growth plan: “They are trying to double in a year… That’s insane in my opinion.”

Perhaps the funniest part of the story is that Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt was close by during the thrashing; he was eating lunch at the business school’s cafeteria.

Pet Peeve: Why do companies still send me my password through email?

Posted on March 15, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 12 Comments on Pet Peeve: Why do companies still send me my password through email?

PasswordkeyLet’s face it; we all reuse the same password for login accounts all over the Internet. At best, some of us create a few passwords through which we rotate. So why is it that some companies still insist on sending me my password via email right after I create my online account? The reason I have a password in the first place is so that it doesn’t flow back and forth openly in cyberspace only to reside peacefully on multiple mail servers.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is set to become the first U.S. university to make all of its courses free on the Internet (in this case, around 1,800 courses). The head of online curriculum, Anne Margulies, says the following, “We started this project because MIT believes that one of the best ways to advance education around the world is through the Internet.”
