Why Blockbuster Total Access Doesn’t Work

Posted on December 21, 2007July 15, 2008 By Bob Caswell 14 Comments on Why Blockbuster Total Access Doesn’t Work

Blockbuster Total AccessIn theory, Blockbuster has a better offering than Netflix in that it “lets you rent online with the flexibility to exchange movies in-store, so you never have to wait for a movie.” That is, according to the marketing pitch plastered all over its homepage. But I decided to see just how “total” Total Access is, and I found it pretty lacking. In short, over half the movies in my Netflix queue are not available at my local Blockbuster.

Internet Video & TV: Can they ever join forces successfully?

Posted on December 12, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 1 Comment on Internet Video & TV: Can they ever join forces successfully?

Sony TVWe here at TechConsumer are no strangers to trying new ways of getting quality entertainment onto our living room big screens. Regular old cable TV doesn’t cut it, what with frequent commercial breaks, horrible selection, and inopportune timing. Surprisingly (at least to us), though, cable TV is what most of the free world uses (the part of the free world with TVs, that is).

To recap, Logan reviewed using Amazon Unbox on TiVo without a computer, Paul reviewed using both CinemaNow and Vongo on the Xbox 360, and each of us took a turn at pointing out why Netflix is amazing. But each service has its disadvantage ranging from “too complicated” to “inconvenient” with “too expensive” and “too slow” somewhere in the middle.

Sony’s Latest Secret Revealed: Focus on TV, Movie Downloads… Good Luck

Posted on September 3, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 3 Comments on Sony’s Latest Secret Revealed: Focus on TV, Movie Downloads… Good Luck

Sony TVThe Wall Street Journal (subscription required) has an article out quoting the usual mix of analysts, speculators, and “people privy to Sony’s plans.” I must say that the article’s title of “Sony to Challenge Apple In TV, Movie Downloads” makes the news sound more exciting than it really is.

Perhaps I should give Sony a chance rather than point out the obvious that the company has a very long way to go. Meaning, it’s a bit of a late comer in an already crowded space (Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Netflix all compete here just to name the big boys). I suppose it’s true that first movers don’t always win, and there isn’t a clear leader yet. But good luck to Sony on this one…

Watch out Netflix! Blockbuster In Advanced Talks to Acquire Movielink

Posted on March 1, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell No Comments on Watch out Netflix! Blockbuster In Advanced Talks to Acquire Movielink

If the deal happens, Blockbuster would be the only company able to offer the coveted video triple-play: combining movies offered online, through the mail, and in-store. Could that be enough for even the diehard Netflix fan to switch? Here are details:

Wal-Mart Goes Digital Movies… Why Netflix May Dethrone Them Again

Posted on February 6, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 3 Comments on Wal-Mart Goes Digital Movies… Why Netflix May Dethrone Them Again

Walmartlogo_1Wal-Mart today announced a partnership with all six major Hollywood Studios (Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Sony, 20th Century Fox, and Universal) to offer digital movies and TV shows via its site: www.walmart.com/videodownloads. While the company has the first mover advantage (being the only digital distributor to go into business with all six studios), I still think Netflix is the company that will make online movie watching a reality (incidentally, Netflix is the company to which Wal-Mart admitted defeat in the DVD rental market). Here’s why:

Why Netflix Will Make Online Movie Watching a Reality

Posted on January 22, 2007August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 2 Comments on Why Netflix Will Make Online Movie Watching a Reality

Netflixlogo_1If you missed the Netflix news last week, the company announced that it will offer existing subscribers the option of watching movies and TV shows online at no additional cost. So if you pay $18 a month for your regular three DVDs at at time mailing plan, soon you’ll be receiving 18 hours of free online watching time too.

What I found intriguing about the story is that just days and weeks earlier, certain prominent bloggers posted why Netflix is in trouble. Mike Arrington had his post “Why I Am Breaking Up With Netflix” while Robert Scoble had his thoughts on “Netflix is dead.” Both came back with follow up stories after the news release (“Netflix, I Was Just Kidding About Breaking Up With You” and “Netflix tells Scoble he’s wrong” respectively).

Poll: What would make you switch from Netflix to Blockbuster?

Posted on December 6, 2006August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 11 Comments on Poll: What would make you switch from Netflix to Blockbuster?

Netflix_3NetflixorblockbusterSo Blockbuster released a holiday promotion yesterday that will let Netflix subscribers rent Blockbuster movies for free. The reaction to the offer is, of course, mixed. Some seem to hate Blockbuster with a passion while others point out Netflix has its own issues (especially when you are a frequent user). How can we know what to do in a case like this?

I thought we could settle this once and for all using my favorite imperfect method: the poll! Question: I would switch from Netflix to Blockbuster IF:
