Amazon Giving $50 Credit to Its HD DVD Buyers

Posted on April 9, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 5 Comments on Amazon Giving $50 Credit to Its HD DVD Buyers

AmazonI purchased my HD DVD player with 10 movies for $174 way back in November. Today, to my surprise, I received the email below. This is much better than the company’s first attempt at treating me as a “valued HD DVD customer” and comes after Best Buy made a similar move. In related news, Amazon also has a Buy 2 Get 1 Free Blu-ray movie promotion happening right now.

Amazon’s Attempt at Helping Its HD DVD Customers

Posted on March 22, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 9 Comments on Amazon’s Attempt at Helping Its HD DVD Customers

Amazon Blu-ray HD DVD DealEarlier this week Best Buy announced that it would offer $50 gift cards to its customers that purchased HD DVD players before February 23. Not only that, the company is giving some trade-in value for HD DVD players or movies, regardless of where they were purchased. Apparently Amazon wanted in on the good PR and has come up with its own way to hook up its HD DVD customers.

Here’s the deal I was emailed from Amazon since I’m a “valued HD DVD customer.” Links are placed exactly as they were in the email:

Apple’s iTunes Now Number Two Music Retailer in the US

Posted on February 26, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 6 Comments on Apple’s iTunes Now Number Two Music Retailer in the US

itunes2.jpgApple has issued a press release about becoming the number two (behind Wal-Mart) music retailer in the U.S. Best Buy used to have that spot, but music downloads seem to be catching on. Well, that and CD sales are declining rapidly.

Apple claims that 50 million customers have bought over 4 billion songs with 20 million sold on Christmas day alone. That’s impressive even if digital music purchases have yet to offset the decline in CD sales.

Amazon Drops Price of HD DVD Player to $99, Upconvert DVD w/ Free Movies?

Posted on February 21, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 21 Comments on Amazon Drops Price of HD DVD Player to $99, Upconvert DVD w/ Free Movies?

HD DVDFor anyone keeping score since Blu-ray won the next generation movie battle, HD DVD players are now $99. And that’s with 7 movies included. Considering these players also work well as upconvert DVD players (DVD players that convert and play regular DVDs at a slightly higher picture quality), in some ways, it’s actually the best deal on the market if you’re looking for a good DVD player.

eBay: No Matter How Hard You Try, You’re Still No Amazon

Posted on January 30, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 23 Comments on eBay: No Matter How Hard You Try, You’re Still No Amazon

eBayMy top issues with eBay: Prices aren’t that competitive, service is inconsistent, time is wasted, and the shipping is a wild card. It’s no wonder then that, due to lackluster growth, eBay recently announced changes including “holding sellers to higher customer-service standards.” But I gave up on eBay years ago when I discovered Amazon has all the same stuff at around the same price but with real customer service.

Just for fun, I thought I’d revisit eBay and see what kind of deals I skipped out on by searching for the last few items I ordered on Amazon. Here’s how the process works: you search for your item and get excited when you see an amazing deal! Oh wait, that auction still has 12 hours before it’s over. So you save it to your watch list and waste more time searching for other deals.

Could HD DVD Make a Comeback? Pricing Now Close to DVD

Posted on January 28, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 7 Comments on Could HD DVD Make a Comeback? Pricing Now Close to DVD

HD-DVD vs. Blu-rayEven if plenty of news is out already assuming HD DVD is dead, other sources are pointing us to facts that show the battle isn’t over yet. After all, you can now get HD DVD players with 7 movies for $126 whereas Blu-ray’s alternatives are, at best, nearly three times as expensive with players starting in the $300’s.

Most all coverage, positive or negative, is relying on data from the NPD Group. Interesting, then, that the NPD Group had to issue a statement addressing how its numbers were being used:

Amazon MP3 Expanding Internationally, More DRM-Free in 2008

Posted on January 27, 2008August 20, 2008 By Bob Caswell 12 Comments on Amazon MP3 Expanding Internationally, More DRM-Free in 2008

Amazon MP3Amazon today has announced plans to take its DRM-free MP3 music store to countries beyond the United States. In the U.S., at least, Amazon MP3 is already the online music store of choice.

It’s hard to compete with the largest library (3.3 million songs from 270,000 artists) of restriction free music, much of which is priced lower than the going rate of $0.99/track. And it integrates seamlessly with iTunes (or other desktop music applications) plus works with pretty much any digital music player available.
