Much better than DRM free, they should offer high bitrate and codec choice (actually you buy a song and can download it in several formats)…. as seen on NeoMusicStore.com

Maybe a kind of AllOfMP3 without the legal issues and the pay-per-Mo model (which isn’t fair except maybe from an IT perspective)

eMusic is great but requires subscription…

Companies often cannibalize their own sales of other products to avoid the competition stealing away customers. In other words, it’s in Amazon’s best interest to sell online music IF online music is a real threat to physical CD sales. Otherwise, some other company will cash in while Amazon loses sales. Better for Amazon to cannibalize itself than to allow another company the pleasure.

But I’d be interested in hearing more on your theory of how the majors will do DRM-free themselves… Do you mean independently of each other or some sort of collaborative method?

Amazon will never sell DRM-free tracks, it’s a direct conflict of interest with its physical CD sales. And if Limewire starts charging people, they will just leave en-masse to another free gnutella client. It would be a huge mistake.

Nah, if the majors start doing drm-free downloads, they’ll do it themselves, through their own web portals, not through a retailer.
